Title: Experience Sampling Method and Time Use Survey with A Probability Sample

Abstract

In time-use research, we usually rely on retrospective ways like the diary method to investigate how people spend 24 hours in a day, and we ask what they are doing in a certain time unit. The retrospective methods are indeed primary ones for time use. Meanwhile, prior studies also point out that they have errors in retrieving memory when answering simultaneous behaviours and irregular events. I am going to discuss the process of a time-use survey using the Experience Sampling Method, utilising a probability sample.

Mixed methods research (MMR) is an approach that involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating both quantitative and qualitative data to enable interpretations based on the strengths of each type of data, thus fostering an understanding of research topics and synergy in knowledge. In the first section of this report, I will provide an overview of the theoretical principles of MMR. Next, as a practical section, I will introduce an ongoing research project as a case study of MMR. Finally, I will explore the potential of MMR using secondary data.

The impact of employment status on social prestige has not been sufficiently explored despite previous research on social prestige covering occupational differences extensively. This study aims to elucidate the influence of non-standard employment on prestige, as well as the relationship between employment characteristics associated with non-standard employment and perceived prestige, based on status evaluations obtained from a factorial survey experiment.

Title: The impact of internal migration on fertility among reproductive-age women: Quasi-experimental evidence from China

Abstract

China is experiencing a notable decline in fertility rates. This paper examines the impact of internal migration on fertility among women of reproductive age using nationally representative panel data from China. To identify causal effects, we leverage the staggered rollout of the 2014 household registration (hukou) reform and community-level migration rates as exogenous variation in migration opportunities. The results reveal a significant negative effect of internal migration on female fertility, particularly among younger women, those with lower levels of education, and individuals holding rural hukou. The fertility disadvantage facing migrant women has diminished over time with shifts in family planning policies. We identify delayed marriage and increased labor force participation as key mechanisms behind the fertility decline. Moreover, internal migration is associated with lower fertility ideals and more modern gender attitudes. Finally, our findings suggest that the hukou reform, aimed at promoting internal migration, also contribute to fertility decline among women.

Presenter's short biography

Haiyang Lu is a professor of economics at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. He is currently a visiting research fellow at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, hosted by Professor Kenji Ishida. His research interests include migration studies, subjective well-being, and labor economics. His work has been published in journals such as Cities, Journal of Happiness Studies, and Journal of Development Studies.
